About Callipo
Callipo is a prestigious Italian seafood brand founded in 1913 by Giacinto Callipo in Pizzo, Calabria, a region historically renowned for tuna fishing and traditional tonnare processing. The company was the first in Calabria and among the earliest in all of Italy to preserve the precious Mediterranean tuna in tins, establishing a heritage of quality that now spans five family generations. The brand's commitment to excellence earned royal recognition in 1926 when Callipo was awarded the prestigious License of Official Supplier to the Italian Royal Household. This dedication to quality continued through the generations, with Pippo Callipo receiving a knighthood as Cavaliere del Lavoro from President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi for exceptional entrepreneurial achievement. In 2014, Italy honoured the brand with a commemorative €0.80 postage stamp as part of the Excellence of the Productive and Economic System series. From their manufacturing facilities in Maierato, Calabria, Callipo produces approximately 5,200 tonnes of products annually, with daily capacity reaching 300,000 cans and 35,000 glass jars. The company pioneered the launch of tuna fillets in glass jars, allowing consumers to appreciate the quality of their catch before opening. All processing follows over a century of traditional methods refined through generations of expertise. Beyond their signature tuna, Callipo produces authentic 'nduja from Spilinga, the spicy spreadable Calabrian salami made from minced pork and fiery chilli peppers. UK shoppers can find Callipo products at Tesco and other quality retailers, bringing a taste of southern Italian excellence to British kitchens for pasta sauces, bruschette, and traditional Mediterranean dishes.
