About Catena
Catena Zapata is Argentina's most celebrated wine producer and the family credited with putting Argentine Malbec on the world wine map. Founded in 1902 when Italian immigrant Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza, the winery remains family-owned through four generations and is one of the few Argentine wine companies still in Argentine hands. Nicola Catena suspected that Malbec - then just a blending grape in Bordeaux - would find its "hidden splendor" in the Argentine Andes. His vision proved prophetic. His grandson, Nicolás Catena Zapata, revolutionised Argentine wine by pioneering high-altitude viticulture. In 1992, he planted the now-legendary Adrianna Vineyard at 5,000 feet in Gualtallary Alto - the highest and westernmost spot in Tupungato. His own vineyard manager warned him Malbec would never ripen at such elevation; it not only ripened but produced wines of extraordinary complexity. In 1994, Nicolás became the first Argentine to export a world-class Malbec, putting Argentina firmly on the fine wine map. Today, Catena Zapata's Adrianna Vineyard has earned more 100-point ratings than any other South American winery, and in 2023, it was voted the #1 World's Best Vineyard by 500 international food, wine, and travel writers. The Catena range available in UK supermarkets represents exceptional quality at accessible prices. The Catena Malbec showcases the grape Argentina has made its own - rich, concentrated, and beautifully balanced with velvety tannins. The Catena Chardonnay demonstrates the family's mastery extends beyond red wine, offering elegant freshness from high-altitude vineyards.
