About Chillys
Chilly's is a British reusable water bottle brand founded in 2010 by Leeds University student James Butterfield, with co-founder Tim Bouscarle joining in 2011. Born from frustration with warm water and single-use plastic, Chilly's has become one of the UK's fastest-growing sustainable brands, reaching over £44 million in sales by 2020. The journey began when Butterfield, tired of constantly buying plastic bottles for cold water, designed a solution that would keep drinks either chilly or hot like a chilli pepper. After graduating, he sold the bottles at Camden Market while working in digital marketing, where he met Bouscarle. Together they secured £9,000 through Indiegogo crowdfunding to develop the business. The company's explosive growth came in 2015 when they pivoted from wholesaler pitching to social media marketing. Sales grew 815% in just one year to £556,000, and both founders quit their jobs to focus on Chilly's full-time. The brand topped the Fast Track 100 league table, outperforming BrewDog, Gymshark, and Honest Burgers. Chilly's environmental impact extends beyond their products through partnership with City To Sea on the award-winning Refill campaign, which has helped stop over 100 million plastic bottles from entering the waste stream. As public awareness of plastic pollution grew following Blue Planet II, Chilly's positioned itself at the forefront of the reusable revolution, proving that stylish design and sustainability can go hand in hand.
