About Covonia
Covonia is one of Britain's most trusted cough medicine brands, made by Thornton & Ross in Huddersfield since 1922. Originally formulated by local chemist S.T. Shaw, Covonia Bronchial Balsam became so popular that Shaw contracted Thornton & Ross to scale up production. The brand has been a British medicine cabinet staple for over a century. Thornton & Ross was founded by Nathan Thornton and Phillip Ross in rented premises in Milnsbridge, Huddersfield. Nathan Thornton's background in tar distillery and disinfectant manufacturing also gave birth to Zoflora. When the 1968 Medicines Act introduced comprehensive licensing, Covonia was further developed and licensed under the new regulations. The brand's iconic Covonia Bull mascot first appeared in 1998, with his memorable "Covooonia" roar hitting TV screens in 1999. In 1998, Covonia launched its first new product in almost 50 years—the Expectorant formula, followed by the Night-Time Formula. Today the range includes 13 products for cough, cold, and sore throat relief. Acquired by German pharmaceutical group STADA in 2013 for £221 million, Thornton & Ross is now the UK's number one adult cough liquid manufacturer. Compare Covonia prices on Grocefully.
