About Excelsior
Excelsior is Jamaica's leading and most iconic cracker brand, produced by the Jamaica Biscuit Company since 1911. Known locally as "tough crackers" or simply "biscuits," Excelsior Water Crackers have been a staple in Jamaican pantries for over a century and are celebrated worldwide within the Caribbean diaspora. The company was established in 1911 by Lionel DeMercado and Alfred DaCosta at No. 2 Church Street, Kingston, Jamaica. Originally baked in wood-burning brick ovens that gave them their distinctive taste and characteristic toughness, the crackers were hand-sorted and packed into wooden barrels. In 1952, production moved to their current site at 206 Spanish Town Road, though the unique formula and quality have remained consistent. Excelsior Water Crackers are fat-free, made simply with baking flour and water, making them a healthier snack option. Their trademark toughness and unique flavour make them incredibly versatile - perfect alongside cheese and wine, with traditional Jamaican dishes like steamed fish and solomon gundy, as a breakfast cereal, or enjoyed on their own as a satisfying snack. Available in the UK through Tesco, Ocado, and Caribbean grocery retailers, Excelsior brings authentic Jamaican flavours to British households. The range includes original Water Crackers and Cinnamon Water Crackers for those seeking a sweeter variation.
