About Forthglade
Forthglade is the UK's most established maker of natural pet food, producing quality dog food in the heart of Devon since 1971. Founded by Basil Palmer and Doug Wilkins—who began by freezing abattoir meat to feed their own dogs after finding a significant lack of quality pet food available—the company has grown from selling frozen tripe blocks to pet shops and breeders into Britain's pioneer of natural wet dog food. The brand was an early UK pioneer in providing grain-free products, frustrated by the lack of good quality natural pet food available on the market. Today, Forthglade operates from a state-of-the-art 70,000 sq ft factory in Okehampton, built in 2018 on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. The environmentally-friendly facility tripled production capacity whilst implementing a circular manufacturing system. Forthglade's range focuses on majority-protein wet dog food using natural ingredients. The recipes include Complete Meal trays (with added vegetables and brown rice or grain-free options), Gourmet varieties, and puppy-specific formulations. Popular proteins include chicken, lamb, turkey, duck and salmon. The brand partners with the National Trust on their Dogs Welcome project, creating a co-branded range of gourmet dog dinners. In 2020, the founders sold their stake to IK Investment Partners, though production remains proudly Devon-based. The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021, marking half a century of pioneering natural pet nutrition.
