About HG
HG is a specialist cleaning products brand headquartered in Almere, Netherlands, with origins dating back to the 1960s. The name derives from Swedish businessman Håkan Gip, who had high-quality cleaning products developed by the University of Stockholm, initially for swimming pools. In 1969, Dutch company Van Altena B.V. from Heemstede began importing these Swedish HG products, finding success not only in swimming pools but also among builders' merchants selling ceramic tiles. When the Swedish company was sold to Finnish owners in the mid-1970s and production moved to northwest Finland, Van Altena purchased the HG formulas and brand rights, establishing manufacturing in Oldenzaal, Netherlands. The company strategically shifted focus from trade to the consumer market, positioning HG as "the brand for all cleaning and maintenance problems in and around the house." The UK was among the first export markets, along with Belgium and Germany. Today, HG products are available at over 3,000 stockists across Britain and more than 45 countries worldwide. The product range now exceeds 300 different HG cleaners covering bathroom and shower, kitchen, carpet and upholstery, floor care, furniture polish and restoration, mould removal, metal cleaning, oven and cookware, stain removal, windows and glass, leather care, outdoor cleaning, and garden maintenance. Each product targets specific cleaning problems with specialist formulations. HG has expanded through acquisitions: Blue Wonder (disinfectant cleaning market leader) joined in 2021, followed by Ecozone (UK ecological home care brand) in 2022. In 2025, two HG products achieved Good Housekeeping Institute expert approval, and the brand won a Corporate LiveWire Innovation & Excellence Award as Cleaning Product Supplier of the Year. HG employs over 150 people and is available at UK retailers including Lakeland, B&Q, Amazon, and major supermarkets. Compare prices across retailers with Grocefully.
