About Pledge
Pledge is SC Johnson's iconic furniture polish brand, first introduced in 1958 as the world's first aerosol furniture polish. Developed by chemist Erland Muoio, Pledge revolutionised furniture care by delivering "waxed beauty instantly as you dust" in a convenient spray format that consumers quickly embraced. The development of Pledge was championed by Sam Johnson, who led SC Johnson's innovative New Products Division during the 1950s. Early testing of the polish showed difficulties controlling application with a cloth, leading the team to pioneer the aerosol delivery system. When tested with 1,000 consumers, the spray format received no negative feedback—and users discovered bonus applications as an effective dusting aid. Pledge was part of a golden era for SC Johnson between 1955 and 1958, joining fellow household names Raid insecticides, Glade air fresheners, and OFF! insect repellents as enduring product innovations. The original formula combined wax and polish to work effectively on wood, metal, and plastic furniture, simplifying the traditionally labour-intensive polishing process. Today, Pledge offers a comprehensive range of multi-surface cleaners, polishes, and furniture care products. The brand continues to be sold worldwide, known as Pronto in Italy and Germany, Pliz in France, and Blem in Argentina. SC Johnson remains a family-owned company headquartered in Racine, Wisconsin, where it was founded by Samuel Curtis Johnson in 1886.
