About Plymouth
Plymouth Gin holds the distinction of being produced at one of the oldest working distilleries in England. The Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, Devon has been crafting gin since 1793, housed in a remarkable 15th-century building that once served as a monastery. This same building famously hosted the Pilgrim Fathers on their final night in England before boarding the Mayflower in 1620. What sets Plymouth apart from London Dry gins is its distinctive smooth, slightly earthy character. The recipe uses seven carefully selected botanicals—juniper, coriander, cardamom, orange, lemon, orris root and angelica—with a higher proportion of root ingredients that create its signature rounded flavour profile. At 41.2% ABV, the original strength delivers a gentle warmth perfect for classic cocktails. Plymouth Gin holds a unique place in naval history, being the original Navy Strength gin. The 57% ABV expression was specifically developed for the Royal Navy—strong enough to still ignite gunpowder if spilled during storage below deck. Newly commissioned Royal Navy vessels traditionally received a Plymouth Gin Commissioning Kit containing two bottles. The brand actually coined the term "Navy Strength" now used across the gin category. Today owned by Pernod Ricard, Plymouth Gin remains the only producer of authentic Plymouth-style gin.
