About Raid
Raid is a leading insecticide brand produced by SC Johnson, first launched in 1956 and quickly becoming one of the company's most profitable product lines. The brand was developed by Samuel C. Johnson, the fourth-generation family leader, who created the first water-based aerosol insecticide that could be safely used both inside homes and on garden plants. The development of Raid represented a genuine innovation in pest control. Samuel Johnson's father initially rejected an early insecticide formula as too similar to competitors, sending him back to the lab. After testing over 70 formulas in laboratory and field conditions, the team perfected Raid House & Garden Bug Killer using allethrin, the first synthetic pyrethroid. By the end of 1956, Raid had become the best-selling aerosol insecticide in America. The brand's iconic advertising tagline "Raid Kills Bugs Dead" was created by Foote, Cone & Belding in 1956 and used for six decades until 2016. The memorable phrase is attributed to Beat poet Lew Welch, who worked at the agency. The famous animated Raid bugs, with their distinctive personalities and inevitable demise, were brought to life by illustrator Don Pegler, who developed the characters for over 40 years. Today, Raid offers a comprehensive range of insect control products including fly sprays, ant killers, moth treatments, cockroach solutions, and insect traps. SC Johnson, founded in 1886 in Racine, Wisconsin, remains a family-owned company dedicated to household cleaning and pest control innovation, with Raid continuing as a cornerstone brand in their portfolio.
