About Swan
Swan is a heritage British kitchen appliance brand with roots dating back to 1868 when Thomas Bulpitt founded Bulpitt & Sons Ltd in Birmingham. Originally brassfounders specialising in lamps and copper kettles, the company registered the Swan Brand trademark in the early 20th century and went on to become pioneers in electrical kitchen appliances. In the 1920s, Swan made a breakthrough by developing the first electric element that could be safely immersed in water. This innovation meant six pints of water could be boiled in just over nine minutes, leading to a range of products including tea urns, kettles, steamers, and coffee percolators. Swan also developed and patented a unique safety cut-out for kettles, a feature now standard across the industry. The brand's engineering excellence was demonstrated even during wartime, with Swan producing a glass kettle in 1939. Their famous 8-30 toaster became known as one of the most efficient and affordable on the market at just over £1. Swan also created commemorative wares for the Coronation and the Festival of Britain, cementing its place in British domestic history. After changing ownership several times—including Moulinex in 1988, Littlewoods in 2000, and Swan Products Ltd in 2017—Swan is now owned by Sutton Venture Group since 2023. Today, the brand is best known for its popular Retro range featuring colourful vintage-inspired kettles, toasters, and microwaves that bring style and heritage to modern British kitchens.
